Water aerobics would make more sense; or maybe even yoga, so why choose one of the “hardest” of hard martial arts, known for its powerful, and sometimes aerial, kicks? The short answer is that it was accidental. My 11-year-old son wanted to give it a try, so I brought him in to Koryo Do School of Tae Kwon Do for a try out class because it was the closest to our house. I took a seat, intending to relax while I watched my son work up a seat. I only got to sit for about five minutes before being invited to join in and learn some simple self-defense moves. I was hooked. Unfortunately, my son discontinued coming after about a year, but I continued. Almost four years and about 1500 hours of…

They Call Me Master

They Call Me Master

[caption id="attachment_469" align="alignleft" width="300"] taekwondo master testing[/caption] They call me Master, yet as I look at my students I wonder. Some of my students are much faster than me; yet they still call me Master. Many, by far are already more flexible than me and dare I say stronger; yet they still call me Master.  Quite a few could easily beat me in a competition; yet they call me Master.  Their progress executing forms and using weapons is nothing but an expression of art, each one an artist in its own way; yet they call me master. But what is a master may I ask?  I did dare to ask this question to two of my senior students and was pleased with the answer, or the lack of as neither…

[caption id="attachment_620" align="alignleft" width="300"] Martial arts and education[/caption] It is true, summer may not be over but back to school time is approaching rapidly.  For some, back to school means school supplies, uniforms and schedules.  Others are looking for activities where they can enroll their kids and few don’t’ even want to think about it. For me as a parent I simply thought about the safety of my kids and how I could protect them while allowing them to enjoy new experiences and develop their potential.  We had them playing baseball, basketball and soccer.  We also supported them when they learned how to play a musical instrument and joined the school band.  Yet the best decision was to have them learn martial arts and encompass the spirit of the martial…

[caption id="attachment_766" align="alignleft" width="168"] Children - our most valuable treasure[/caption] This week I have been putting pressure on one of my students.  He is one of the youngest in my school and has been milking this fact to no end.  He has also been blessed with intelligence and the ability to manipulate others with a puppy face.  He seems to have a great time at the school but has shown no interest in moving forward in the ranks so I have been harder on him with the "rewards" so he shapes up and moves forward. Last night, after class, he came back with his mother to pick up his cousins.  As the only child at that time he was the center of attention and once  again he took advantage of…

What is a Black Belt

What is a Black Belt

Articles
With the proliferation of black belts in the market a simple thought came to my mind.  What is a black belt? I actually have potential students and parents that simply ask questions such as: how long does it take to be a black belt?  How much will it cost?  However, no one asked about what is a black belt so here it is. A black belt is a piece of cloth used to hold together the top of our work out clothes.  This particular piece of cloth does not award special powers to its user.  If anything, the tear and wear of the same is nothing but a record of hard work, sweat, tears and sometimes injuries that we attain thru our martial arts’s journey. From a different point of…

Lose Weight and get in shape

Lose Weight and get in shape

News & Updates
Have you ever considered martial arts as one of your resolutions of the year?  Lots of individuals have incorrect assumption about martial arts such as: I'm too old for that, that stuff is for kids alone and even the I'm afraid I'll get hurt.  However in my book the true martial artist is not the one that hurts others but the one that seeks to improve himself/herself.  So far my adult students have lost weight, gain balance, improve their conditioning and even learn how to defend themselves without having to kick or punch someone. So consider us as your new year's resolution and lets work together at increasing your quality of life.
