Starting Tae Kwon Do at 50. Are You Nuts? – David Haynes, author

Water aerobics would make more sense; or maybe even yoga, so why choose one of the “hardest” of hard martial arts, known for its powerful, and sometimes aerial, kicks? The short answer is that it was accidental. My 11-year-old son wanted to give it a try, so I brought him in to Koryo Do School of Tae Kwon Do for a try out class because it was the closest to our house. I took a seat, intending to relax while I watched my son work up a seat. I only got to sit for about five minutes before being invited to join in and learn some simple self-defense moves. I was hooked. Unfortunately, my son discontinued coming after about a year, but I continued. Almost four years and about 1500 hours of…

They Call Me Master

They Call Me Master

[caption id="attachment_469" align="alignleft" width="300"] taekwondo master testing[/caption] They call me Master, yet as I look at my students I wonder. Some of my students are much faster than me; yet they still call me Master. Many, by far are already more flexible than me and dare I say stronger; yet they still call me Master.  Quite a few could easily beat me in a competition; yet they call me Master.  Their progress executing forms and using weapons is nothing but an expression of art, each one an artist in its own way; yet they call me master. But what is a master may I ask?  I did dare to ask this question to two of my senior students and was pleased with the answer, or the lack of as neither…

Why I teach martial arts

Why I teach martial arts

[caption id="attachment_766" align="alignleft" width="168"] Children - our most valuable treasure[/caption] This week I have been putting pressure on one of my students.  He is one of the youngest in my school and has been milking this fact to no end.  He has also been blessed with intelligence and the ability to manipulate others with a puppy face.  He seems to have a great time at the school but has shown no interest in moving forward in the ranks so I have been harder on him with the "rewards" so he shapes up and moves forward. Last night, after class, he came back with his mother to pick up his cousins.  As the only child at that time he was the center of attention and once  again he took advantage of…

What is a Black Belt

What is a Black Belt

Articles
With the proliferation of black belts in the market a simple thought came to my mind.  What is a black belt? I actually have potential students and parents that simply ask questions such as: how long does it take to be a black belt?  How much will it cost?  However, no one asked about what is a black belt so here it is. A black belt is a piece of cloth used to hold together the top of our work out clothes.  This particular piece of cloth does not award special powers to its user.  If anything, the tear and wear of the same is nothing but a record of hard work, sweat, tears and sometimes injuries that we attain thru our martial arts’s journey. From a different point of…

The Best Martial Arts School

The Best Martial Arts School

Articles
Today was a day of meditation and as always the time I spent on that activity brought me more questions than answers.  The first thing that crossed my mind was the popularity of the martial arts and the way our present culture selects the school for their children. The interesting fact is that if you ask anyone the chances are that they have taken classes at one point in time or another.  Another interesting point is that most parents consider that martial arts training should be and may have been at some point in time part of their child’s life.  Looking further into this matter you will see that they want their child to learn how to defend themselves.  They also like some of the core basics of martial arts…
