I want to get in shape!  I want to lose weight!   I do not want to be afraid!   I want to be able to defend myself and those I love! How many of you are thinking about this or something similar, yet don’t know where to start?  Even worst, you will simply let it slide and won’t act on it altogether? My point is as follows: This year I promoted a good friend of mine to 6th degree black belt.  That by itself is quite significant as I have only promoted a little over twenty black belts in over forty (40) years as an instructor.  During his test he demonstrated several self-defense techniques, fought a couple of times and performed techniques that anyone out of shape wouldn’t…

Safe Halloween

Safe Halloween

News & Updates
Safe Halloween Halloween is coming.  I see the decorations, the ads and quite a few costumes for sale.  Other than that, I don’t see any different this year from other years.  Yet, although it pains me to admit it, we live in a dangerous world and every year it seems is ever more so. I thought about this and decided to do something about it, so here it is: During the month of October, Koryo Do Instructors will be doing presentations regarding how to make Halloween a safer holiday, even if you don’t celebrate Halloween.  Then close to the end of the month, we will offer a self-defense class to teach all attendees some basics on how to defend themselves. The target audience and presentations will be divided into kids,…

[caption id="attachment_605" align="alignleft" width="300"] self defense classes at koryodo, school of tae kwon do[/caption] Bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation and assault are thing that we face quite frequently.  We do not think about it but any time we are introduced into a new environment we increase the potential of become a victim to one of these threats.  It is actually normal if you consider that the threat itself comes from social behavior and the interaction among different individuals.  However, as a parent I always worried if my kids will be prepared to handle this challenge and whether they will be safe in this new environment. While I wish I was there to protect them the reality of life is that the best thing I can do for them is to prepare…

[caption id="attachment_620" align="alignleft" width="300"] Martial arts and education[/caption] It is true, summer may not be over but back to school time is approaching rapidly.  For some, back to school means school supplies, uniforms and schedules.  Others are looking for activities where they can enroll their kids and few don’t’ even want to think about it. For me as a parent I simply thought about the safety of my kids and how I could protect them while allowing them to enjoy new experiences and develop their potential.  We had them playing baseball, basketball and soccer.  We also supported them when they learned how to play a musical instrument and joined the school band.  Yet the best decision was to have them learn martial arts and encompass the spirit of the martial…

Children Abductions

[caption id="attachment_759" align="alignleft" width="300"] Missing or abducted children[/caption] Abducted Children stats are alarming.  A video I watched this morning placed the number of children abducted as 700 per day.  I re-posted the video on our Facebook page but decided to do some additional research.  My findings were somewhat of an eye opener as the figures I found actually indicated that there are 40 children per hour that go missing or are outright abducted.  Basically we are looking at 350,400 children per year are lost. For me the answer is simple, give them the tools to identify the dangers and how to handle them.  In other words, if you look for a martial arts school forget about the color of the belt or the size of the trophy and make sure…

[caption id="attachment_752" align="alignleft" width="109"] High School/College graduate[/caption] As we prepare to attend a number of high school graduations and get our children out to college I had to pause based on a mother's comments and her intention to keep her daughter at our school while she was going to college.  This simple comment made me happy but instilled a query on my mind about the facts.  My query turned into research and a great web site I found with the information and source at the bottom of this post. In this particular case I wish more parents will act like her and think about measures to empower their children and give them the tools needed to succeed and be safe.  The impact of this mother's comment and the facts are…

What is a Black Belt

What is a Black Belt

Articles
With the proliferation of black belts in the market a simple thought came to my mind.  What is a black belt? I actually have potential students and parents that simply ask questions such as: how long does it take to be a black belt?  How much will it cost?  However, no one asked about what is a black belt so here it is. A black belt is a piece of cloth used to hold together the top of our work out clothes.  This particular piece of cloth does not award special powers to its user.  If anything, the tear and wear of the same is nothing but a record of hard work, sweat, tears and sometimes injuries that we attain thru our martial arts’s journey. From a different point of…
